A witness informed Officers that the bakkie with an NU registration that was involved in the accident had stopped a few minutes earlier and picked up hitchhikers.

Six (6) people are confirmed dead & six (6) people are in a critical condition following a collision between a Heavy Motor Vehicle & a Light Motor Vehicle on the Umdloti Beach Road near the RTI Offices at Umdloti – KZN.

Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene at approx 14:51 this afternoon (Monday) and upon arrival found the RTI in attendance. Paramedics from several private services assisted in stabilizing several critically injured patients.

Reaction Officers found four (4) occupants mangled in the wreckage of a silver Ford Bantam bakkie. Two other victims including a pregnant female were found deceased after been ejected from the bakkie.

According to the driver of a black & blue Mercedes-Benz truck, the fully laden bakkie was traveling towards Verulam when the driver drove into the oncoming lane while reaching for an unknown item in the vehicle.

Motorist using the Umdloti Beach Road to Verulam or Waterloo are requested to use alternate routes for the

next few hours.
