TheSouthafrican- Police in Pretoria West have acted swiftly to apprehend an officer whose drunken behaviour dragged SAPS into disrepute. It is believed the 43-year-old cop discharged his weapon in the direction of an innocent party, and went on a foul-mouthed rant towards the people he was threatening to arrest.
Two videos were posted to Twitter on Thursday 16 January 2020: A man who appears to be a South African Police Service (SAPS) officer can be seen ranting a few metres away after allegedly opening fire on a motorist. He makes a wide range of claims, even saying that he is a “priest” – his on-duty partner seems mortified by the whole ordeal, and does little to calm his colleague down.
In the footage, a man thought to be the motorist can be heard saying that the police officer is drunk and that he allegedly fired a gun at him – and those with him.
The clip has spread like wildfire, leaving many South Africans apoplectic with the man’s behaviour. In a statement shared online, SAPS confirmed they had identified the rogue employee and he’s now facing three separate criminal charges. An urgent departmental investigation is now taking place.
“Police have arrested a 43-year old Sergeant stationed at Pretoria West on charges of intimidation, crimen injuria, and discharging a firearm in a municipal place. An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances reported to have taken place on Wednesday evening on Charlotte Maxeke Street.”
“It is alleged the arrested police officer drew his firearm and threatened the complainant. Gauteng Police Commissioner General Elias Mawela has instructed an urgent departmental investigation be undertaken to address the Sergeant’s unbecoming conduct captured on a video clip that is now circulating online.”
