A protest has erupted at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg.

Riots have reportedly broken out at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Parktown and community members are advised to keep clear of the area.

Scores of hospital staff have taken to the streets, allegedly over unpaid performance bonuses.

Reports from the scene suggest that the gates to the hospital have been blocked, with no one allowed in or out.

The National Health Education & Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) says hospital management has made empty promises about paying workers.

Union representatives are on their way to the hospital.

Speaking to to our reporter,  Nehawu provincial deputy secretary Gracia Rikhotso says it’s a long-pending dispute.

“We have tried to intervene as a union and to talk to management to get a commitment about when payment would be effected.”

However, she says all attempts to resolve the issue have failed.
