Themba Zwane and Sibusiso Vilakazi were both on the score sheet Mamelodi Sundowns brushed Bidvest Wits 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld at maintain their top spot on the log.

 

Sundowns were out to take advantage of Orlando Pirates’ slip-up in midweek and this they did with two first half goals.

The Brazilians were playing some impressive football in the opening exchanges and threatened to get on the scoresheet early on.

Themba Zwane unleashed a pile-driver for Masandawana in the 15th minute from just outside the box but The Clever Boys shot-stopper Darren Keet smothered the fierce strike.

In the 20th minute, Zwane got the opener for the hosts with a strike inside the box following a defence-splitting pass from Percy Tau, 1-0.

Gavin Hunt’s charges upped their tempo after half an hour, noticeably making strong challenges but couldn’t yet establish their rhythm going forward.

 

Sibusiso Vilakazi doubled the lead for the Brazilians in the 35th minute with a clinical strike between the legs of Keet following another pass from Tau, 2-0.

Daine Klate looked to break their duck with a close shot after being played through by Phumlani Ntshangase, but Denis Onyango gathered it well.

The second half started with the defending champions trying to get back into the game but could not.

Pitso Mosimane’s men were more in control of the match with 20 minutes remaining still keeping a lion’s share of possession and denying the visitors chances.

With nine minutes remaining, Edwin Gyimah made a goal-saving tackle for Wits nyo deny a clear-on-goal Morena the chance to slot into an empty net.
